Top Tuesday: Top Books I Think Make Great Beach Reads

Top Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by Breaking the Spine and today’s list is top books I think make great beach reads. I had to do a Google search on beach reads as I never have done any beach reading before, and I found the perfect definition that was useful before making today’s list.

Beach reads are books that are typically light, fluffy and you don’t need to follow too intensely in case you get interrupted on the beach. This makes sense because normally you read books that are easy to pick up and put down while enjoying your vacation, so when selecting books to take with you to the beach, you want something that is entertaining and you wouldn’t normally read. During this time of season many people like to suggest romance, which has become a popular beach read. The only problem is that I don’t usually read light romance or anything too fluffy so making this list was a bit of a challenge and I could only narrow it down to nine books.

1. Crazy Rich Asians by Kevin Kwan

This book is full of laughs as Kevin pokes fun of Asian stereotypes and culture in this romantic comedy about a Chinese American dating a rich Singaporean whose family is said to be richer then the Queen of England. This book is best described as Gossip Girl meets Downton Abbey.

2. The Devil Wears Prada by Lauren Weisberger 

If you’re heading to the beach in style, may as well pick up something that goes with your outfit, like The Devil Wears Prada where a new intern records her daily life working in the most fashionable magazine in New York City.

3. Attachments by Rainbow Rowell

An entertaining story about a guy who stumbles across an email, and unexpectedly falls in love the other side of the web. I plan on reading this over the summer and I’m just dying to know if these lovebirds meet in person.

4. Love Fortunes and Other Disasters by Kimberley Karalius

A new book that just came out so I don’t know much about the story but you have to admit, that is a beautiful looking cover! Just take a moment and gaze at the cover adoringly.

5. A Little Something Different by Sandy Hall 

I feel torn just adding this title on the list as I didn’t enjoy the book like everyone else did. But if you’re looking for something cute and fluffy then this falls under that category.

6. Love by the Morning Star by Laura L. Sullivan

Another romantic comedy but set during World War II. Imagine two girls: one seeking fortune and the other a family to settle down with during the war. But when they arrive at the same mansion of an upper English family, they are both mistaken for each other (whoops!) Did I also forget to mention that one of them is a German spy? Oh, and both girls fall in love with the same man who is an heir to a family fortune.

7. The Rosie Project by Greame Simsion

This is probably my favorite romantic comedy novel as I absolutely loved Don Tillman! He’s sweet, adorable and even though he is socially awkward and his behavior almost unbearable to handle, Don really is a nice guy just looking for the perfect mate.

8. Something Borrowed by Emily Giffin

I remember reading this book way back when I started this blog. This was at a time where I was exploring the romantic genre and I came across Emily Giffin. This is a pretty cute love story but with drama as a girl “steals” her best friend’s fiancé weeks before their wedding.

9. Where’d You Go Bernadette by Maria Semple 

I heard interesting reviews about this story where a girl’s mother has gone missing after promising her the dream trip to Antarctica. The story is composed of snippets of emails, letters, and even invoices as the daughter tries to find her mother following the trail of clues. I heard this was a really funny story so if you are looking for something quirky to read, then this would make a great companion to take with you to the beach!

After compiling this list, I realized that all the books I’ve chosen fall under the romantic comedy category. Can you think of any other books from other genres that you recommend taking to the beach?
