Waiting on Wednesday

Waiting on Wednesday: Dumplin by Julie Murphy

Waiting on Wed bannerWaiting on Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Breaking the Spine. Every week bloggers share new books that we are eagerly anticipating, and this week I am waiting for Dumplin which is coming out on September 8!

This book has been making its rounds around Instagram and Twitter and is listed as Epic Reads Most Anticipated Fall Releases this Year! After reading the synopsis on Goodreads, I immediately added this on my fall TBR as I knew the story would bring a lot of laughs. A story about a fat girl who falls in love with a high school jock, and is brave enough to register herself at a beauty pageant, because why the hell now?! Here’s the rest of the synopsis:

Self-proclaimed fat girl, Willowdean Dickson or Will (nickname Dumplin) has always been comfortable in her own skin. Thoughts of having a bikini body, put on a bikini! With Ellen as her best friend at her side and a job at a local fast food joint, things have always worked well in her life. Until she meets private school Bo, a former jock and takes a liking to Will, who likes him back.

But Will starts to doubt herself so she sets out to do something to take back her confidence: Will sets out to join the Clover City beauty pageant. Her mission: to prove to the world that she deserves to be up there as much as any skinny girl does. Will shocks everyone at Clover City and maybe to herself too.

Doesn’t this sound like an entertaining read? And for the first time our main character is a fat heroine! This is a breath of fresh air as we frequently read stories about skinny girls with perfect skin, so reading about a self-proclaimed fat girl and her soon-to-be insecurities about her appearance and what the world around her thinks seems real. Woman come in different shapes and sizes so why shouldn’t there be a fat heroine? I think Will is the kind of character that women can relate to but that really depends on how well the character plays out, and we won’t know until the book is finally released next week!
