Summary:

Readers will revel in Edgar Allan Poe’s classic tales and how they’ve been brought to life in thirteen unique and unforgettable ways by favourite YA authors.

My Review:

There were a few short stories that I really enjoyed. The two stories I liked were Happy Days, Sweetheart and Changling. This anthology also includes thirteen of the original Edgar Allan Poe stories the retellings are based off of too, so I’m giving this book another star. The whole anthology was alright in terms of taking some of Poe’s classic stories and rewriting them in a different setting that is either this present time or somewhere in the far future. After killing the men who stole her father’s research, Juliet and her friends escape to an estate owned by Elizabeth Von Stein. The mansion is filled with mysteries and a dark history of forbidden science, including dead corpses in the cellar, secret passages, and a fortuneteller who seems to know Juliet too well. When Juliet uncovers the secrets behind the Von Stein family, she is forced to decide where the line between right and wrong, life and death, magic and science, and promises and secrets. She must also decide if she’s following her father’s footsteps, her mother’s tragic ones, or her own.

My Review:

So I actually finished reading the trilogy last month but I wrote the review late. This has become one of my favorite trilogies this year and I’m so glad that I finished! What a wicked way to end the trilogy; so many juicy secrets, plot twists, sudden betrayals, and more mad science that I found myself screaming internally in all the right moments and not having to let go of the pages until the end. Once again, Megan Shepherd has still managed to grab my attention and pull me into Juliet’s world of horrifying legacies and mad science experiments that it’s so hard to even write this review without all caps and fangirl screams! She is now rebuilding her new life in London while trying to forget her father’s cruel experiments — although someone or something hasn’t forgotten about her. People with connections to Juliet are falling victim to a mysterious attacker whose calling card are three claw like slashes. After discovering this, Juliet fears that one of her father’s creations have escaped the island. She is determined to find the killer but that would mean facing a love from her past that she never expected to see again, and awakening a darker side of herself. In the meantime, Juliet continues to find a cure for her illness, driving her down towards scandal and danger.

My Review:

After that heart-breaking cliffhanger from The Madman’s Daughter I had to pick up the sequel, and I ended up devouring it! The suspense, the thrills, the conspiracy and the betrayals, this sequel had me gaping at all the right moments as reading it was a thrilling ride that I’m giving this a perfect 5 rating! The only problem with writing this review is not using all caps and exclamation marks too many times. Continue reading “Review: Her Dark Curiosity by Megan Shepherd”

My Review:

Do you love mad science, mystery, a passionate romance, and an independent heroine who doesn’t give an eff of what anyone else thinks of her? Then you will love this story as much as I have! For the life of me I couldn’t even peel my eyes off the page as I was completely absorbed into this story. The incredible plot, the characters, that intense bone chilling plot twist, AND THAT FREAKING ENDING! There is so much to love about this book that I am trying really hard not to write this entire review in all caps. Continue reading “Review: The Madman’s Daughter by Megan Shepherd”
